Clinical profile

Inhalation of hydrogen (usually mixed with oxygen). In experiments, hydrogen shows antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; clinically there are a few small RCTs (fatty liver disease, athletes) and no large trials. Most reviews concern hydrogen water rather than inhalation.

Every statement links to a publication in the list below. This is a snapshot of published research, not a final assessment of the method: international practice and integrated protocols often run ahead of official publications. Draft based on published research; requires review by a physician. Revision: 2026-10-17.

Mechanism of action

  • In basic research, hydrogen has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects and protects mitochondria. [1]
  • In preclinical models, hydrogen improved outcomes in sepsis, acute lung, liver and kidney injury, trauma and brain injury. [2]

Where studies show an effect

  • Moderate to severe non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: improvement in a placebo-controlled RCT. [3]
  • Intensive training: professional rugby players showed fewer markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. [4]
  • Physical performance in healthy people: possible gains in explosive power and less fatigue (the review mainly covers oral intake). [5]

Open questions and study limitations

  • Preventive and therapeutic benefit in nervous system disorders remains uncertain owing to the lack of large RCTs. [1]
  • No effect on aerobic and anaerobic endurance or muscle strength was found in the meta-analysis. [5]
  • Hydrogen water needs studies with large samples and rigorous methodology. [6]

Safety

  • In humans with various diseases, hydrogen showed a good safety profile. [2]
Contraindications. Contraindications are determined by the physician according to the equipment or drug instructions; they are not given in study abstracts.

Evidence base

There are isolated small RCTs with inhalation; systematic reviews note a lack of large trials.

Publications were found in PubMed; titles and journals are given verbatim, conclusions are a brief summary of the abstracts under the conditions of the specific studies. The level shows the volume of published data, not the value of the method: A — Plenty of data: consistent systematic reviews and meta-analyses of RCTs; B — Some data: reviews or several RCTs, results are heterogeneous; C — Little data: single RCTs or controlled studies; D — Scarce data: mainly reviews, observational and experimental studies. The passport is updated as new work is published and with regard to international practice.
